Mr. Trash Man

OK. Do you think that 3rd world countries don't know where it is at?

READ THIS

1. Mr. Trash Man

Compared to the States, the less fortunate people in this country actually work for their money and help the environment at the same time. While in Medellin, I learned that their is a large group of "trash diggers" that go through the city garbage cans and separate out paper, cans, bottles, or anything of value. I occasionally see them eating the remains of sandwiches or a mature piece of fruit. As the saying goes, what might be one man's trash is another man's treasure.

2. Metro Cable

What a concept! I absolutely love when public transportation utilizes gondolas instead of cars. Transports people, who live in surrounding areas, is a prior in Medellin and Manizales hence the gondolas. Living in Colorado, gondolas are as a means to transport people from the bottom of the ski slopes to the top of the mountain in a warm enclosed place. What a concept use them everyday to get people without cars to work or to a bus terminal to take them to their destination. A ride in the gondolas is a must do in either Medellin or Manizales.

3. Street Food

People need to get over their fear of eating from the street. Some of the tastiest food I have eaten in Colombia has been from a random street vendor. I find it quite exciting to help out a local selling a meat kabob or some weird fruit drink (guanaba). The fruits and vegetables here are so rich and juicy that you just can't get enough.

4. Minutes To Buy

The amazing thing about this country is that you can buy a local phone for $25 dollars and then buy minutes as you go. It only costs you money to call but is free when you receive calls. I was not sure I needed a phone in Colombia, but it is the best way to meet friends and keep contacts. You can buy minutes at the grocery store, on the street or wait till you get a special pico y plata rate. A true way to see a country and meet the locals is with a local phone.
